The Chelsea striker believes it is unfair to criticise him for missing another set of international fixtures due to injury but admits his story with la Roja "hasn't started yet"
Chelsea striker Diego Costa has admitted he has been unhappy to have his commitment to the Spain national team called into question.
The 26-year-old has once again been forced to pull out of Vicente del Bosque’s squad due to injury having not played for his country since October.
Costa pointed out that he chose to play for Spain instead of his native Brazil and believes the criticism he has received for his recent absences has been unfair.
“It bothers me that my presence is called into question,” he told Marca. “I decided to play for Spain because I wanted to.
“I showed that I had enthusiasm and desire to succeed in the national team. The best way to shut mouths is to play and do well. But as I haven’t done that yet, I have to listen and swallow it.”
He added: “It’s one thing to criticise me because of my performances, which is fair, but to be criticised for [not] being committed…. It's too strong after what I experienced in Brazil.
“I'll try to get to my best to succeed in the Spanish national team.”
Costa also expressed his frustration at the injury setback which will deny him the chance to feature in the important World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.
"My story with the Spanish national team hasn't started yet,” he said. “I haven't done anything yet.
“I'm sorry not to be able to contribute what I wanted to. Something always happens to me when Spain matches are coming up but I'm raring to succeed with Spain.”
