Vermaelen returns to Barcelona training

Vermaelen returns to Barcelona training

The Belgium defender has not made a single first-team appearance for the Catalans since his summer move from Arsenal due to a succession of hamstring problems

Thomas Vermaelen has trained with Barcelona for the first time since undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury in December.

The Belgium defender has been plagued by injuries since arriving from Arsenal in August and is yet to make an appearance for his new club, but participated in part of a session on Wednesday morning.

Luis Enrique had just nine first-team players at his disposal due to international call-ups, with 'B' team goalkeeper Adrian Ortola also joining the group.

Martin Montoya returned to the fold after sitting out Tuesday's session but Dani Alves could only train separately.

Vermaelen arrived at Camp Nou with a hamstring problem sustained at the World Cup, but made a brief return to training in September.

The 29-year-old looked set to to make his first-team bow later that month but continued to suffer setbacks and at the end of November discovered he would need surgery.
